End Food Waste Australia welcomes new leaders

Tuesday 15 July, 2025

End Food Waste Australia has appointed Wendy Hughes to the newly created role, Director of Policy, Communications and Strategic Engagement, an important step in strengthening the organisation’s national presence and policy influence.

With more than 20 years of leadership experience across government, agribusiness, higher education and the not-for-profit sector, Wendy brings a depth of expertise to a role that will guide End Food Waste Australia’s policy, research translation and strategic engagement efforts.

The role will be central to progressing action on the National Food Waste Strategy, as well as on the critical recommendations from recent government inquiries into food waste, food security and food systems. It also reflects End Food Waste Australia’s role as a trusted source of evidence-based advice and insights, underpinned by the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre, the largest food waste research program in Australia.

End Food Waste Australia CEO Tristan Butt said Wendy’s background made her exceptionally well-placed to take on the role.

“Wendy brings a unique blend of policy expertise, evidence-based advocacy and a strong values-driven approach that aligns perfectly with our mission,” he said.

“This role will be critical in bridging the gap between industry and policy, ensuring that policy initiatives are translated into practical and impactful actions.”

Originally from regional South Australia and now based in Cairns, Wendy has a longstanding interest in food systems and sustainability. Most recently, she served as the Chief Executive Officer of COUCH, a Queensland-based cancer support service.  She has also held Advocacy leadership roles with Cairns Regional Council, Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils, and Advance Cairns, playing an integral role in securing significant government funding for regional infrastructure projects.

Wendy, who will officially commence in the role on 21 July, 2025, said she was looking forward to building on the organisation’s achievements and strengthening its impact.

“I’m honoured to be joining End Food Waste Australia at such a pivotal time. I look forward to working with the team and our partners to drive bold, practical solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and food-secure future.”

In addition to Wendy’s appointment, End Food Waste Australia is pleased to welcome Jack Moore as the new Chief Financial Officer, joining the organisation later this month.  Jack is an experienced CFO, with extensive experience across manufacturing, logistics, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals and waste management. His expertise will be instrumental in supporting End Food Waste Australia’s continued growth and impact.

Finally, Bonnie Sleeman will be joining us on this month, as our new Senior Campaign Manager.

Bonnie brings a wealth of experience in strategic communications and campaign project leadership, including recently in the UK and Germany, where she delivered campaigns for the UK Department for Business and Trade and the Department for Education, and in Australia for the Office for Early Childhood Development.

End Food Waste Australia leads the implementation of the National Food Waste Strategy and works with government, industry and communities to halve Australia’s food waste by 2030.
